CHAPTER 20

Freewood was an old city, slowly being modernized by the press of opportunistic real estate developers who saw the makings of a quiet retreat amongst the hilly terrain. It started on the north end of the city, the closest side to the Greater St. Louis Metropolitan.

The developers and their business partners had run into a block as they reached the heart of the city and the southern half. Mounds of companies and sub-companies left them so confused, they couldn’t even find the name of the owner. They would have been astounded to find out that all of the property was owned by a single woman.

Pruella stepped out of her car, a smile coming to her face as she took in the sight of the Freewood Public Library. She’d found that only three things could still captivate her throughout the longevity of a vampire’s life; strength, beauty, and knowledge.

The library was a culmination of all three. Pruella had designed it herself. Her family held strong ties to the European countries and she’d brought a appreciation for Gothic architecture with her when she crossed the ocean.

Twelve stone steps led up to two large wooden doors. The main section was made of a gray granite speckled with black. A marble archway stood over the door, a slanted black roof covering the main section. The two columns coming off the side ended in needle point spires. Seeing the numbers of zeroes on the check for its construction would make the average person’s eyes roll out of their skulls. Pruella would have paid double. It was perfect. She would live in it, surrounded by her personal collection of books she’d accumulated over the years, but she didn’t want to chance marring its presence with the comings and goings of her life.

“Stay here,” she ordered her driver, barely acknowledging the newling Addison had assigned her for the day. She glided up the stairs and pulled open the double doors, sighing as a wall of absolute quiet hit her.

The doors opened into the museum part of the library. It displayed small items, chronicling the city’s life and growth. A large table in the middle of the room showed a scale model of Freewood, not as it was, but the wild country it was when it had first been settled.

She ran her fingers over the fake grassy hills, feeling nostalgia tug before she moved on. Two hallways came off the room. One led to a media room and, beyond that, the library opened to the public. The second hallway led to the rooms that housed her personal volumes.

A red rope blocked off the entrance, guarded by two vampires. The assignment was another menial job given to those recently pulled into their world. She didn’t recognize their faces, but they of course
